If you do not find what you’re after here for exterior repair please do contact us even if it is simply a question so we can add this to our FAQs. Paintless Dent Removal (PDR) This repair technique is ideal where there is no paint damage and the dent size is up to medium size. For dings a tool kit called a mini dent lifter is used where by an adapter is bonded to the surface of the panel directly above the dent. Then the dent lifter is then carefully used to pull the ding back out of the panel. Inexperienced operators tend to end up pulling a high spot, i.e. inverting the ding. Another method used for PDR is the use of bars which are slid behind the ding which are then used to gently push the ding out. Patience and an understanding of how each movement of bar affects the ding is crucial for this technique to be 100% successful. Line dings and dents prove to be the most difficult to remove with PDR techniques but is still achievable with a skilled operator. MAPS have fully qualified and skilled staff for using this technique which is often used, even on dents as large as a football. MAPS staff is highly regarded in the industry for being experts in removing dings and dents. Small Paint Blow ins (Small areas to paint) This repair technique is essentially a scaled down version of conventional painting techniques to suit the size of the damage. Used most commonly where there is minor paint damage to the vehicle. ![]() Overview of steps taken for a blow in are:
Time to undertake a small blow in can range from 1hr to 3hrs, often customers arrange to have a number of blow ins done on a vehicle to reduce the cost per repair. Large Paint Blow ins The conventional version of blow ins but panel preparation is more involved and is done where light damage covers a medium to large area or where there is several areas of damage in close proximity to each other. Larger painting apparatus is also used. Large Accident/Corrosion Repair There it may become more economical to replace panels rather than repair them. E.g. corrosion on a door may be so bad it may be better to replace the entire door or accident damage to a bumper may make it cost effective to replace rather than repair (please note we also undertake bumper mould plastic repair). The panels can be ordered and painted before hand hence allowing the panel to be easily fitted on location where ever that may be. MAPS have equipment to cater for any type of damage, whether it be, requiring a welder or jig equipment. Bumper repair Most OE manufacturers either have plastic or glass fibre bumpers. MAPS has plastic welding tools which are able to not only able to repair the damage but also able to build strength back into the affected area. Glass fibre repairs also often require strength to be built back into the affected area. If a glass fibre repair is not done properly it will show with hairline cracks reappearing very shortly after the repair has been done. With glass fibre damage the cracks need to be ground out with a grinding machine and then rebuilt up with new layers of glass fibre. Coach Work (wood work) Some classic vehicles have timber in their construction such as the Morris Minor. MAPS is fortunate to have skilled operators whom have the skills and experience to cater for these vehicles. Often the rotten timber is completely removed and a new piece is installed using traditional methods. |
